Embrace Life Again

Navigating life after limb loss is full of physical challenges, along with emotional ups and downs. From relearning how to do basic activities to coping with your new way of life, progress can feel difficult – but you can get back to the things you love with the right amputation rehabilitation program, prosthetic training and a dedicated team of experts in your corner.

Finding Your New Normal

Along your journey, you may face mobility limitations, pain, balance concerns and the challenges of adapting to a prosthetic limb. Everyday tasks may feel different, and adjusting to a new normal can take time and patience, but with the right support, it is more than possible.

Through specialized amputation rehabilitation, patients can develop the skills and confidence needed to adapt to new challenges and return to meaningful daily activities.

Your Partner in Recovery

While recovery looks different for everyone, specialized amputation rehabilitation can help you build strength, improve function and gain the confidence needed to navigate daily life with greater independence. At Baptist Health Rehabilitation, our experienced team provides personalized therapy, prosthetic training and ongoing support tailored to your unique goals and challenges.Because recovery involves both the body and the mind, our program also includes specialized neuropsychology support to help patients and their families navigate the emotional complexities of limb loss.

To assist individuals in regaining functional independence, the Amputation Program at Baptist Health Rehabilitation Institute includes two phases: the pre-prosthetic phase and the prosthetic phase.

The pre-prosthetic phase is for recent amputees. The focus is on wound care, stump shaping, mobility training, and developing an exercise program for strengthening and flexibility in preparation for a prosthesis (artificial limb).

Patient and family education on preventing complications is also a key component. Whether patients require upper limb amputation rehabilitation or lower limb amputation rehabilitation, our team develops personalized treatment plans focused on each individual's goals, abilities and lifestyle.

For individuals who have healed and acquired a prosthesis, the prosthetic phase focuses on assuring proper prosthetic fit and learning to safely function in mobility and daily activities. Baptist Health works closely with prosthetists, using simulated home settings (like fully-equipped kitchens and bathrooms) to ensure a smooth transition to home, work, and the community.

Amputation rehabilitation care includes patient/family education on equipment, resources, and medication, and arranging for post-discharge care such as outpatient therapy or home health services. To ensure a strong continuum of care after discharge, patients can transition to our specialized outpatient amputee clinic to continue building their skills. We also offer a dedicated peer mentoring group that connects patients with others who have successfully navigated life after amputation, providing invaluable emotional support and shared experiences. Our comprehensive amputation rehabilitation approach helps patients safely return to home, work and community activities while maximizing function and independence.

Thanks to the high level of comprehensive care we provide, Baptist Health Rehabilitation Institute–Little Rock is the only facility in Arkansas with CARF accreditation in amputation rehabilitation, offering nationally recognized expertise to help patients adapt, recover and move forward with confidence.
