Who is a hospitalist? 

A hospitalist is a doctor who specializes in the care of people admitted to the hospital, and their practice is in the hospital, not in an office. A hospitalist’s role is to focus on caring for patients during their hospital stay. Our hospitalists are trained in internal medicine and understand the unique needs of hospitalized patients.

What is the role of a hospitalist as it pertains to my care?

A hospitalist serves as your primary care provider (PCP) while you are in the hospital. It is a hospitalist’s job to help you regain health as quickly as possible. They do this by creating a personal plan of care for each patient and working with nurses and other health care professionals to give this one-on-one attention. We make sure to communicate clearly with all clinicians during your care.

What is the benefit of a hospitalist?

The main benefit of being cared for by a hospitalist is having a doctor who is available around the clock to make changes to your treatment. Some of the jobs done by hospitalists include updating your medicines, scheduling and preparing you for tests, and making sure you are ready for surgery. Hospitalists are also there to talk with you and your family and to answer any questions about your medicines, test results, or recovery. What is the hospitalist’s relationship with my primary care provider (PCP)?

Your hospitalist and primary care provider work together by communicating when you are admitted and by sharing important information that supports your treatment. At discharge, the hospital team sends your medical records and discharge plan to your primary care provider. That way, your care continues smoothly even after you leave the hospital. Understanding who is a hospitalist helps patients see how this teamwork makes their health care stronger.
