A Discussion About Your Medical History
Your doctor will ask questions about your past health to understand what might be causing your symptoms. This helps them choose the best treatment for you. It’s important to share details like:
- Past births
- Genetics
- Age
- Weight
- Strenuous activity
- Chronic coughing
- Chronic constipation
- Other factors
An Open Conversation About Your Symptoms
It might feel uncomfortable to talk about bladder or pelvic problems, but your doctor is there to help – and they’ve heard it all before. Be as honest and detailed as you can. They might ask about:
- Bladder leaks or incontinence
- Pressure or bulges in the vaginal area
- Pelvic pain
- Constipation or diarrhea
- Any other symptoms
The more they know, the better they can help you.
A Physical Exam
After talking, your doctor will likely do a short pelvic or rectal exam. These exams don’t take long, but they give your doctor important information to make a diagnosis or decide what to do next.
A Treatment Plan and/or Further Testing
After your exam, your urogynecologist will either diagnose your issue and provide treatment options, or further tests will be prescribed to reach a diagnosis. These may include urodynamics, ultrasound, cystoscopy, or a bladder lining exam or colonoscopy.
We hope you now have a better idea of what to expect at a urogynecology appointment. At Baptist Health, we offer women exceptional, comprehensive treatment for a wide range of urogynecological conditions. If you’d like to talk to a urogynecologist about any issues you’re currently experiencing, request an appointment with one of our specialists.
