Eight Strategies to Lower Your Stroke Risk
Each year about 700,000 people in the United States experience a new or recurrent stroke, which is the nation’s third-leading cause of death. Your stroke risk increases with age. Fortunately, you can reduce your risk with these strategies:
- If you smoke, talk to your doctor about nicotine replacement and other stop-smoking aids.
- Drink alcohol in moderation, if at all.
- Add more fruits and vegetables to your diet.
- Choose whole-grain cereals and breads.
- Get moving for at least 30 minutes every day.
- Ask your doctor whether you should take aspirin.
- Practice good dental habits to prevent gum disease.
- Seek treatment for depression.
