To gain greater protection against heart disease, you need to pick up the speed. A good goal for an average-sized woman is a pace of 3.5 to 4 mph.
To tell how fast you're walking, count how many steps you take in a minute. A woman with an average stride of 2.5 feet will usually clock 3.5 mph by taking 120 steps per minute. If she takes 140 steps, she'll be walking at 4 mph. Someone with a longer stride can obviously walk a mile in fewer steps and needs to aim for a faster pace.
To boost your walking routine-and burn more calories-try adding
some stairs to your route. And swing those arms to increase your
heart rate and give your upper body a workout, too.
